A Chicago police sergeant appears to have taken his own life in a home in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood on the South Side, where a high concentration of police resides. That’s the 4th Chicago Police Officer to commit suicide in the last two years and at least the 13th in the last four years.
On July 14, 2021, an officer’s body was discovered in the parking lot of an elementary school on Chicago’s Southside. The medical examiner’s office determined it was suicide.
On March 5, 2021, an officer with 15 years on the job died after shooting himself inside his home also in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood.
On March 1, 2021 an officer shot himself to death in a locker room inside the Town Hall District police station on the Northside. A 21-year Chicago police veteran, the officer was expected to retire that week.
This comes after a top-ranking Chicago police officer was found shot to death by suicide in his office in a police station on the West Side of Chicago. He had recently been promoted to Deputy Chief.
How deep is the pain when you decide to take your life in a very violent manner in your home, office, grammar school parking lot, or the locker room you share with your partners?
Do we not get the message?
As of July 14th, 2022 a “911” version of a suicide hotline will be available nationwide.

The funding however is lacking. A recent one-time influx of $280 million from the federal government will not cover the initial and ongoing expenses. Infrastructure, telecom, staffing, etc. in all 50 states is vital to offer the caller local resources for assistance.
